Dam overflowing (on left) flooding paddock below
Hi there bloggies!
I was working on a card post … but just had to share some weather news. In the 11 years we have lived on the farm … I have NEVER seen so much water! It has been raining heavily on and off since Friday afternoon. Today has been torrential … all day. Apparently 60mm in half an hour at one point! And … 195mm … between 9am & 2pm. Latest: Albion Park 228mm since this morning! That is an astronomical amount of rain. The pool has overflowed and water is collecting around the back of the house. Our dam has overflowed! Yes … it has done that several times before … but NOT LIKE THIS!!! The whole of the paddock below the dam is under water … our driveway is flooded … and our road in both directions is cut. Thankfully, Gavin came home early … and was able to see that the road was soon going to be impassable … and we managed to get down to the school to rescue Sandy. He would have been stranded at school! Shane was on his way out 1/2 an hour ago for his 1st day of prac in the renal ward at Wollongong Hospital … and he tried all the roads in every direction … only to be turned back each time. He has had to come home … and wait it out. All the family is safe at home … except Skye … who is in Wollongong at uni. (1/2 hr drive) There is no way she will get home for several hours at this rate. Thankfully, Stace & Jono live near the uni … and she can shelter there until this passes.

From our road looking back up to the (big) dam on the left near the tree (hidden by the rise of the hill). You can see the "rapids" flowing into the front paddock.
Honestly … it is still bucketing down … and it seems like it will never give up. I am very thankful that the house is on a hill and is really not in any danger of being flooded. But … I am sure that there are others who will be flooded out. Sandy’s school is at the end of our street … in the middle of dairy farm land. It has never been cut off …. but I have a feeling that there might be some kids stranded this afternoon if they can’t get the buses into the school soon. The bridge into town is almost under (Shane got through to get home … but he said it would be under very soon.) As I write … the wind is now starting to pick up … and there is a severe weather warning for the Illawarra.
TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST
DETAILED SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING for FLASH FLOODING
For people in parts of the Greater Wollongong area.
Issued at 1:54 pm Monday, 21 March 2011.
The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 1:45 pm, severe thunderstorms were
detected on weather radar near Albion Park, Shell Harbour and Kiama. These
thunderstorms are slow moving. They are forecast to affect Jamberoo and waters
off Kiama by 2:15 pm and Gerringong and Gerroa by 2:45 pm.
Very heavy rainfall and flash flooding are likely.
Albion Park has recorded 63 mm in the hour to 1 pm. Kiama has recorded 48 mm in
the past hour.
Albion Park … yep! That’s us!
So … I guess it is all a little exciting … but also a worry for parents who haven’t got their kids home, yet. I just rang my sis (PA to principal at the school) and she said that they are all “stuck”. The phones are running hot. Only 1 bus is allowed through to Dapto (this road is cut to normal traffic) … and all other directions are completely cut. I do wish I had all my kiddies home safe and sound … but I know that God will be watching over Skye, Stace & Jono. The weather must be interfering with the internet … and the TV signal. We keep losing both. Hopefully I will manage to get this posted.

The water in the front paddock has gone over the road ... for the 1st time since we have been here. Since this photo was taken an hour ago ... the water has risen substantially and cut this road. Several sections of our street have gone under.
So … just to let you all know … I am feeling a little better today. My cough is easing … and the fevers are beginning to recede. I am up and around … but spending time catching up on a few things. I didn’t feel like gym this morning. And … I was glad that I didn’t go out in the rain. I will try and get that card post done … but am feeling a little unsettled & distracted at the moment!

This is the causeway at the end of our road ... that often floods in heavy rain. But ... this is the deepest we have ever seen it! You can't even see the road ... or the creek that flows beside ... it is just one mass of water!
Praying that you all stay safe and dry today! Hugs xxaxx
Added 6pm: The school has managed (at 5pm) to get some buses out via a back road … but this route is only open for an hour. The rain is starting to close in again … and so the police have said they will be closing this road again soon. There is not enough time for Skye to get to this road before it closes and the reports are all saying not to try and get into Albion Park for now. I think she should stay put … and as it gets darker … it seems more likely that she won’t get home tonight. The total rainfall 9am to 6pm for Albion Park is now at 269mm!!!!!!!! and that is on top of the 129mm we got over the weekend. xx
